چکیده
The statistics of persistent events, recently introduced in the context of phase ordering dynamics, is investigated in the case of the one-dimensional lattice random walk in discrete time. We determine the survival probability of the random walker in the presence of an obstacle moving ballistically with velocity v, i.e., the probability that the random walker remains up to time n on the left of the obstacle. Three regimes are to be considered for the long-time behavior of this probability, according to the sign of the difference between v and the drift velocity V of the random walker. In one of these regimes (v > V), the survival probability has a non-trivial limit at long times, which is discontinuous at all rational values of v. An algebraic approach allows us to compute these discontinuities, as well as several related quantities. The mathematical structure underlying the solvability of this model combines elementary number theory, algebraic functions, and algebraic curves defined over the rationals.

We demonstrate the phenomenon of self organized criticality (SOC) in a simple random walk model described by a random walk of a myopic ant. The ant acts on the underlying lattice aiming at uniform digging of the surface but is unaffected by the underlying lattice. In 1-d, 2-d and 3-d we have explored this model and have obtained power laws in the time intervals between consecutive events of ‘di...
متن کاملHeparin induced thrombocytopenia
Abstract Background and Objectives Heparin is still a commonly used anticoagulant in prophylaxis and treatment of thromboembolic events. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a life-threating adverse drug reaction of heparin. The diagnosis of HIT is made based on two important criteria, firstly clinical evaluation and secondly laboratory testing. In this comprehensive review, the authors w...

We use the Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation to include the effects of low-lying Gamow-Teller and first forbidden strength in neutrino capture by very neutron-rich nuclei with N = 50, 82, or 126. For electron neutrinos in what is currently considered the most likely r-process site the capture cross sections are two or more times previous estimates. We briefly discuss the reliability of o...

A chiral random matrix model with locality is constructed and examined. The Nielsen-Ninomiya no-go theorem is circumvented by the use of a generally applicable modified Dirac operator which respects the Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We observe the expected universal behaviour of the eigenvalue density in the microscopic limit.
متن کاملIntroducing the RadBioStat Educational Software: Computer-Assisted Teaching of the Random Nature of Cell Killing
The interaction of radiation with cells and tissues has a random nature. Therefore, understanding the random nature of cell killing that is determined by Poisson distribution statistics is an essential point in education of radiation biology. RadBioStat is a newly developed educational MATLAB-based software designed for computer-assisted learning of the target theory in radiation biology. Altho...
